Discovery Canyon Campus Middle School's gymnasium recently hosted Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) detectives for an unusual match up. Dividing the gymnasium’s court, dozens of dodgeballs awaited brave players vying for bragging rights.

As students and officers dodged, ducked, and threw balls across the court, the winners were obvious: DCCMS eighth graders dominated the game against local police detectives. After two rounds of losing to students, CSPD recruited a couple dozen of the best players to join their ranks, proving that working together makes true winners.

The match was part of PLAYCOS, an innovative program designed to build positive relationships between law enforcement and local youth.

“My primary role will always be creating a safe learning environment for students and staff. However, another important aspect is building trusting relationships,” said DCCMS Colorado Springs Police School Resource Officer, Le Vuongvu. “Sports in general are a universal language.   When we get an opportunity to play dodgeball, it helps strengthen those relationships with our students, staff, and our community by connecting with the people whom we serve.”

During their visit, CSPD donated new soccer, football and basketballs to the school’s Physical Education classrooms that will be enjoyed for years to come.
