Powered by a generous donation, Discovery Canyon Campus High School (DCCHS) will be home to Academy District 20’s (D20) newest indoor practice facility. Field House construction began in April, followed by a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the addition, and will continue through the end of the school year and summer break.

“This field house is possible because of the relationships we’ve built at DCCHS,” shared Ron Sukle, the school’s Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. Funding for the field house was donated by longtime DCC parents, Del and Kristi Creps.

“Any kid, regardless of what their economic status is, can develop their skills and become the best that they’re capable of being,” explained Del Creps.

As a softball coach at DCCHS, Kristi Creps saw a need for indoor practice facilities in Colorado Springs, but especially in D20’s most northern secondary campus. Come August, the 1,800 square-foot facility will provide an indoor practice facility for students and athletes campuswide when the weather isn’t ideal for outdoor athletics.

“For years, we’ve had to cancel practice, replace weathered batting cages, and miss out on opportunities because our students didn’t have a warm place to improve their skill,” Sukle explained.

The field house will primarily serve baseball, softball, football and other sports who rely on safe training areas. During the school day, the field house will also be used as an additional academic area, with space for testing and indoor recess for DCC Elementary School students.

As Sukle approaches his retirement at the end of the 2023-24 school year, he said he is proud to have coordinated a new school addition that will benefit students for decades.

“That legacy makes me feel good that I ended well,” he said.

The Field House is scheduled to open on August 1 barring any delays.
