Participation in School Choice

If you’d like your student to attend an Academy District 20 (ASD20) school which is different than the one assigned to your student's address, or if your student lives outside of district boundaries, you will need to apply for School Choice.

When do I Fill Out a School Choice Application?

  • In-District Students

    • If you'd like your student to attend a school which is different than the one assigned to your address, you'll need to apply for School Choice.

    • If you're already attending one of our schools via School Choice, that strand of schools becomes your path through our district. You don't need to re-apply for School Choice as long as your student remains in this strand of schools. If you want to move to a school outside of this path of schools, even if it's back to your neighborhood school, you'll need to re-apply.

  • Out-of-District Students

    • If your student wants to attend an Academy District 20 school, but lives outside our boundaries, you'll need to apply for School Choice.

    • If your out-of-district student is already attending an Academy District 20 school via School Choice, but is transitioning from elementary to middle school (5th to 6th grade), or from middle to high school (8th to 9th grade), you'll need to re-apply.

Non-participating Schools

While most Academy District 20 schools accept School Choice applications, there are a few exceptions. The schools below do not participate in School Choice:

  • Aspen Valley High School

  • Home School Academy

  • Village High School

  • Village Middle School

  • The Classical Academy

  • New Summit Charter Academy

  • Preschool

School Capacity

Some of our schools may be at or near their student capacity. While selecting a second choice school is not required, we encourage you to do so during the application process in case your first choice school is unavailable.

Application Acceptance & Considerations

School Choice applies to students, kindergarten through 12th grade, wishing to attend a school other than their neighborhood school. Students are accepted based on space availability and in the following priority order:

  1. In-district students with siblings already attending the school selected

  2. In-district students with no siblings attending the school selected

  3. Out-of-district employee students

  4. Returning out-of-district students

  5. New out-of-district students

If more students apply than seats available, a lottery is held following the same priority order.

Submit an Application

  • This application process is entirely online.

  • The application will be available on this page when the School Choice Window opens.

  • Applications are processed in a manner that ensures fairness, not based on the order in which they are received. For example, each application is evaluated based on the same criteria to ensure that every applicant has an equal opportunity, regardless of when they submit their application.

After the Application

  • Once your application is submitted you will receive an email confirmation from our Central Registry Office containing any additional instructions or next steps.

  • School Choice notifications will be made according to the schedule on the School Choice Window page.

  • If you wish to change your School Choice selection, or revert back to a neighborhood school, a new School Choice application must be submitted per the posted School Choice Window dates.

Register Your Student After Approval

Once your School Choice application is approved, you must register your student.
